The Rise of Suicide – A Silent Crisis We Cannot Ignore

In recent years, the rise of suicide has become a painful reality across the world, and sadly, Africa is not left out. In Nigeria and other West African countries, more young people are losing hope and choosing to end their lives. This is not because they are weak—it is because many of them are struggling with pain, pressure, and trauma they feel no one understands.

Why Is This Happening?

  • Stigma: Talking about mental health is still seen as a sign of weakness in many African homes.

  • Unemployment and financial struggles: Daily stress of survival can overwhelm anyone.

  • Isolation: Many people suffer in silence because they don’t know where to find help.

How Do We Fight Back?

  1. Talk about it: Break the silence. If you notice someone withdrawing or talking about hopelessness, don’t ignore it.

  2. Offer listening ears: Sometimes, what a person needs most is to be heard without judgment.

  3. Encourage professional help: Just like we see doctors for malaria, we must seek help for emotional pain.

💡 Plan of Action:

  • Start weekly check-ins with family and friends. A simple “How are you, really?” can save a life.

  • Join or create small community support groups where struggles can be shared without shame.

  • Encourage young people to talk, not hide.

Thank you VOG USA for sharing this. May God provide for your organization to help us in West Africa because we lack mental health awareness and services and support is too expensive
