As an Organization You already know by now that we are passionate about promoting and supporting all things mental health for west Africa and today 09/19/25 we officially Announce, there is an ongoing GoFund me (fundraising )for this project but first of all Lets dive into the WHAT/ WHY / WHEN of this project!

Mental health is often misunderstood, silenced, or ignored in West Africa. Too many people grow up believing that kindness is weakness, that trauma should be hidden, Abuse is normal and should not be talked about openly (thus the society/family stigma associated with Abuse regardless of what kind), that depression is shameful/not a bigdeal so you have to “simply get over it” and seeking mental health support is a WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY…sadly the list goes on. From Childhood to Adulthood we carry burdens of stress, poverty, and pain, but they are told to “just be strong” or “pray harder.”

The silence is costing us lives. According to global research, half of all mental health struggles begin before the age of 14—and yet, in most parts of Africa, children grow up with no mental health education, awareness or support at all. And it has been a norm for generations that people regardless of age/gender face stigma when they try to speak about their struggles, this is especially true for the males as if African boys/men are somehow exempt from the mental health crisis ravaging the continent.

At the Vivian Okafor Greenheart Foundation (VOG USA), we believe that knowledge is the foundation of healing. That is why we are launching a groundbreaking new subproject:

Publishing and Sharing Free Mental Health Awareness Books for both children and adults across West Africa.

Why Books?

Books have the power to plant seeds of awareness in places where silence has reigned for too long. Unlike a single conversation or campaign, a book stays with you—it can be read as many times as needed, shared, referenced and passed down. It can shape a generation.

Our project will focus on two main books:

📘

1. A Children’s Mental Health Awareness Book

Designed with simple language and illustrations, this book will:

  • Teach children to recognize their emotions.

  • Show them that it’s okay to talk about feelings.

  • Break the shame around sadness, anger, or fear.

  • Give them tools to cope with stress and trauma.

Why start here? Because children are the future—and if we teach them early, we can break the cycle of this crisis before it takes root.

📗

2. An Adult Mental Health Awareness Book

This guide will speak directly to parents, teachers, youth leaders, and everyday community members. It will:

  • Explain common mental health challenges in simple, relatable terms.

  • Highlight the link between poverty, trauma, and mental illness.

  • Provide tips for recognizing and supporting those in distress.

  • Address stigma from cultural and faith-based perspectives.

By equipping adults, we empower families and communities to provide support instead of silence.

Our Vision: Distribution Across West Africa

These books will not be sold for profit. They will be printed, distributed, and shared for free in schools, libraries, community centers, orphanages, churches, mosques, and even online. Our goal is to make sure that no child, youth, or adult is left without access to knowledge about mental health.

Why This Matters

Imagine a young boy in a Nigerian village who learns, for the first time, that his sadness does not make him weak. Imagine a mother who realizes her child’s restlessness is not stubbornness, but anxiety. Imagine a teacher who discovers how to encourage, instead of punish, a struggling student.

This is the change these books can bring. Page by page, we are planting hope, breaking stigma, and rewriting the future of mental health in West Africa.
